Volleybal werd in 1895 in de Verenigde Staten uitgevonden door William G. Morgan, een sportinstructeur die een minder intensieve sport dan basketbal zocht. Hij noemde het oorspronkelijk “mintonette,” maar al snel werd het “volleybal” genoemd vanwege de manier waarop de bal over het net wordt geslagen. De sport groeide snel in populariteit en werd in 1964 zelfs een Olympische sport. Sindsdien zijn er varianten ontstaan, zoals beachvolleybal, dat ook zijn weg naar de Olympische Spelen vond.
Basisregels en Speelveld
Bij volleybal speelt elk team met zes spelers, en het doel is om de bal over het net te slaan zodat het tegenstandersteam deze niet terug kan spelen. Punten worden gescoord wanneer de bal de grond van het veld van de tegenstander raakt. Een wedstrijd wordt doorgaans gespeeld in sets, waarbij het eerste team dat drie sets wint, de wedstrijd wint. Het veld is rechthoekig, en de nethoogte verschilt afhankelijk van de categorie (mannen, vrouwen, jeugd). Beachvolleybal
